Melting Snow, Warming Hearts: Crafting Clear Driveways for Your Winter Delight!

Long-Term Cost Savings

In Ontario, the winter season brings frigid temperatures and the onset of snowy, icy weather conditions. These conditions necessitate extra time, expenses, and inconveniences related to maintaining the safety and accessibility of your property. However, with a heated driveway, many of these worries can be alleviated.

Advantages of Having a Heated Driveway

  1. Enhanced Safety: Implementing a Heated Driveway minimizes the chances of slips, falls, and damage to your vehicle or property due to snow and ice.

  2. Physical Well-being: Repeatedly shoveling your driveway during the winter can strain your health, while the use of chemicals can deteriorate its surface. By installing a heated driveway system, the need for plowing, shoveling, and chemical application is eliminated.

  3. Long-Term Savings: A Heated Driveway can lead to cost savings on snow removal services, equipment, chemicals, and time. Manual snow removal methods are labor-intensive and can deteriorate the driveway surface. Additionally, a heated driveway can prolong the lifespan of your driveway by preventing cracks and erosion.

  4. Increased Property Value: Incorporating a Heated Driveway enhances the appeal and value of your residence, making it more appealing to potential buyers.

  5. Luxurious Comfort: A Heated Driveway not only provides a warm and inviting entrance to your home but also offers versatility for heating other areas such as walkways, patios, or pool surroundings.

Varieties of Heated Driveway Systems

Electric Driveway Heating

Electric heated driveway systems employ electric cables or mats installed beneath the pavers or asphalt of your driveway. These cables or mats are linked to a thermostat, regulating the system's temperature and operation schedule. Electric heating systems require connection to a power source and are recognized for their reliability, straightforward installation process, energy efficiency, and minimal maintenance requirements.

These systems are particularly suitable for smaller to medium-sized driveways because of their ease of installation, relatively lower initial expenses, and minimal operating costs for smaller surfaces.

Hydronic Driveway Heating

A hydronic driveway heating system utilizes flexible tubing installed beneath the driveway surface, through which glycol (anti-freeze) flows, circulating to a boiler or heat pump. The heat generated is then transferred to the driveway's surface, effectively melting snow and ice. Equipped with sensors, the thermostat can activate and deactivate automatically.

Compared to electric systems, hydronic driveway heating systems are more potent, adaptable, and environmentally friendly. They are well-suited for larger or irregularly shaped driveways due to their robust heating capabilities and cost-effectiveness for larger projects. With hydronic systems, the initial cost of the boiler and associated equipment remains fixed, with incremental increases corresponding to larger driveway sizes. Consequently, as the driveway's size increases, the cost per square foot decreases, rendering it a more economically viable option for larger driveways. The average installation cost for a hydronic system is $43.75 per square foot, with an average operating cost of $0.10 per hour per 100 square feet.
